Best AI for writing short stories

For short stories you write yourself, the best AI helps line by line and tells you what a reader feels, which is why we put Feldar (ours) first. Claude is the best free reader to talk a story through with. For a story written entirely by AI, NovelAI and Squibler generate one from a prompt.

What a short story needs from AI

A novel needs an AI that remembers. A short story needs one that reads closely. In 3,000 words there is no room for a slack paragraph, a muddled point of view or an ending that explains itself, so the most useful AI help is at the level of sentences and reactions: what to cut, where a reader's attention drops, whether the last line lands.

That is why the order below differs from our novel lists. Story memory matters less here; line editing and honest feedback matter more.

The best AI for each stage of a short story

Finding the idea

ChatGPT, Claude

Ask for twenty situations, not one story. "Twenty ways a wedding toast could go wrong" gives you raw material; you pick the one that is yours.

The first draft

You, or Sudowrite

Most writers who care about the result draft short fiction themselves. If you want help, Sudowrite drafts quickly, and Feldar's Continue from here adds a paragraph in blue that you accept, revise or dismiss.

Sentence by sentence

Feldar

Select a paragraph and choose Tighten, Clarify, Sharpen Prose, Dramatize or Raise Tension, or type an instruction. Every change is marked in a card, and your original stays until you apply it.

Before you send it out

Feldar, Claude

Feldar's Lens runs reader personas over the page: a Critic, a Poet and a Reader can each tell you what they felt, or argue. Claude is good at answering one specific question: where did you stop caring?

Titles and first lines

ChatGPT, Claude

Ask for thirty and expect to use none of them directly. They are useful for seeing which words keep coming up.

Checking the basics

Feldar

Five Checks look for grammar and spelling, clarity, word choice, dialogue transitions and point of view slips, and mark each issue in the text.

The tools, briefly

01Feldar Ours

Best for line editing and reader feedback on a story you wrote

Feldar was built for novels, but its revision tools suit short fiction well. Paste or import your story, then work through it: rewrite a passage with Polish, Deepen or Enhance and see each change before you apply it, run the Checks, and ask Lens personas or Reader reactions how the page reads to a chosen audience, such as literary magazine editors or creative writing students.

Best free reader to talk a story through with

Paste in the story and ask narrow questions: what does the narrator want, which scene could go, does the ending earn itself. Anthropic uses consumer chats for training only if you allow it, if a chat is flagged for safety review, or if you opt in, so check your settings before pasting unpublished work.

Official site: claude.com · Free; Pro $20 a month or $17 billed yearly.

03ChatGPT

Best for ideas, titles and quick research

Fast and broad. On individual plans OpenAI may use your conversations to train its models unless you turn off "Improve the model for everyone", so do that before pasting a story you plan to submit.

Official site: openai.com · Free; Go $8 a month; Plus $20.

04Sudowrite

Best for drafting and expanding scenes fast

Sudowrite's Write, Expand and Describe tools and its fiction-tuned models help most when the draft is thin. It says it does not train on your writing.

Official site: sudowrite.com · From $10 a month billed yearly, or $19 monthly. Free trial.

05NovelAI and Squibler

Best for a story written for you

NovelAI continues whatever you start, with unlimited generation on paid tiers and encrypted stories; it gives 50 free generations to try. Squibler generates stories and books, with 500 free AI credits a month. Useful for play or practice, but read the next section before submitting anything they write.

Official sites: novelai.net, squibler.io

Submitting a story you wrote with AI help

Read each magazine's or contest's guidelines before you submit. Many refuse AI-generated stories outright, and some say what kind of AI assistance they accept, if any. When the rules allow editing help but not generated text, keep the line clear: write the sentences yourself and use AI for questions and feedback.

Keep a record of how you worked. Notes are enough; in Feldar, the Writing record keeps a private count of what you typed and what came through its tools. If a market ever asks, that answers better than any AI detector.
